A shallot by any other name

We Aussies call them shallots, others call them green onions, or scallions, or spring onions, or onion shoots, or breath destroyers… a shallot by any other name would taste as sharp!

Yes, I’ve been too busy this week studying and dropping 40kg computer cases on my big toe to post here. Don’t ever do the latter, it’s not as fun as they advertise it to be. Considerably less fun. Actually it’s really not fun at all.

So to break this break as it were without taking too much time, here are some pictures of Hatsune Miku from the Vocaloid series holding a shallot. Or a green onion. Or a scallion. Or a… damn it!

Come to think of it, they all look more like leeks than shallots. DAMN it!

Aishiteruze Baby

I like corm too :D.

It doesn’t matter that Elfen Lied… according to WordPress this is Rubenerd Blog post number 666. Wooooh!

Elfen Lied

I was actually only shown a few episodes of that anime… and it freaked me out. Well, not really, but… okay yeah it did. Shaddup.

Happy Singles Awareness Day

Happy Vanentine’s Singles Awareness Day everyone. Yes, much more politically correct lah!

On to other matters though, it seems the situation at home has become a bit more stable now, so I’m looking forward to creating the Rubenerd Show again starting later this week. Stay tuned for the latest.

As usual I’d like to thank Felix, Dave, Matt, Bird/Liz/Elizabeth/Something, Ruth, Hotaru-senpai (she really hates that), Jimbob and of course you for the support you’ve given my family and I over these last few weeks.

At the expense of possibly up-to-the-minute stories and so forth; I’ll be resuming the recording by doing shows a few days in advance to give myself some buffer space. Ideally I’d love to do shows a week in advance in case when something else happens but for the time being that seems a bit silly. I am still determined to do weekdaily shows instead of a weekend one though!

Kuala Lumpur International Airport WiFi is sweet!

So I was at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA to people in the know) for a long drawn out reason which I won’t attempt to explain here, and I found myself trying their free WiFi access. Given my experience with TMNet’s WiFi at the Starbucks coffee shops here I was a bit skeptical about how good it was going to be. As it turns out it was faster than out DSL at home!

As you would know if you read this site in any manner resembling regularity I love screenshots, so here are some from my WiFi adventures :D.

Here’s the initial welcome screen when I logged on for free on my MacBook Pro:

Here’s the welcome screen when I booted into Haruhi KDE FreeBSD ;):

And what better thing to do on free WiFi network in a Malaysian airport but listen to Whole Wheat Radio?

REC Anime Review

REC Anime DVD

The latest anime I’m watching is REC, based on the manga by Hanamizawa Q-Tarou. It’s a SHAFT production, directed by Ryotaro Nakamura (you can find out more through Wikipedia, the Anime News Network or the official Japanese website.)

What initially drew me to this series was its peculiar episode format: in the first (and current) series there are nine episodes, but unlike most other anime each episode is only 12 minutes long. It’s actually a very watch-able time, it’s not too long for when you don’t have much time and it keeps each episode interesting. I think many other serialised shows could benefit from being shrunk, I’m sure you could have an episode of most Western television shows cut in half and still retain the necessary elements to keep the plot the same.

As with the timing of the episodes, the premise of the story also drew my interest; instead of being yet another series centred around a team of high school girls or evil robotic cyborgs (not that those in certain does are a bad thing mind… ahem) it shows the adventures of a young businessman who seems to be a dead end marketing job and a 20 year old aspiring seiyū (which is ironic in itself considering seiyū artists would be involved in the production of the anime itself) who idolises Audrey Hepburn. An interested premise!

I’m watching the DVD release with English subtitles. I don’t think there’s an English dub available, and I don’t care, I hate dubs! ;). Seeing as I’m so early into the story I’m not going to rate it just yet, but I can tell already that it could be in my top 5.

With this series I’m going to be doing something I haven’t done before; I’m going to review each series as I watch it. Even if nobody else is interested at least it gives me a record of what’s going on!

I’ve seen Episode 1 already but it’s almost 02:00am here and I should get to bed; I’m going with my mum to the hospital for her chemo very early tomorrow. Actually… today, damn it!

Sailor Moon Season One DVD Reviewed

Like Speed Racer and Dragonball Z, I remember watching Sailor Moon as a kid getting ready for school first thing in the morning on Agro’s Cartoon Connection when we lived in Brisbane. Whatever happened to that show? They screened (unfortunately) the english dub.

Anyway one of my favourite blogs to read Need Coffee (the name originally drew me to it!) posted this review regarding the first original uncut season on DVD:

One of the truly interesting things about this series is that Usagi, while annoying at times, is so imperfect. How tiresome is it to have only perfect heroes all the time? Usagi is a clutz, doesn’t do very well in school, and is more than a little silly; she prefers shopping and playing video games to saving the universe, but that’s what makes her so approachable as a heroine. She’s normal.

In short, if you’re a Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon fan, this set is an absolute must-have. If you’ve never quite gotten into this show before, then check it out now; the inclusion of the missing dialogue and scenes make the whole thing more intelligible, though no less fun. There’s something here for many kinds of fans, from romantic comedy to science fiction or even mystery. From middle aged men to young girls, there’s just something about Usagi and her friends that appeals to people, once they give her a chance. Even if this show stays in the “guilty pleasure” category, let Tuxedo Kamen, Luna, Rei, and the rest take you for a very wild and action-packed ride.
